CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 7 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team split their double header with a loss against division II No. 18 ranked UC San Diego, 8-1, and swept Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Occidental, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens had a tough matchup against UCSD as they dropped all three of the doubles matches to start the day.
The only win for the Sagehens against the Tritons came in a singles match as freshman Caroline Casper sealed a win with a 10-8 tie breaker victory in the No. 2 spot.
Pomona-Pitzer had much more luck against Occidental as they began the competition with three-straight wins in the doubles matches.
Sophomores Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen started things off with an 8-2 win. Freshmen Joy Kim and Arianna Chen followed that up with an 8-0 victory and Casper and senior Mae Coyiuto finished off the doubles matches with an 8-0 win.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to win all of the singles matches as well. Kim got the first win for the Sagehens in the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 victory and Casper followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Sophomore Shivani Doraiswami, Zhao, Coyiuto and Chen all went on to win their singles matches in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 as the Sagehens moved to 1-1 on the year.
Pomona-Pitzer next takes the court at the ITA National Team Indoors on Friday, February 26th at 7 a.m.
