CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 1 ranked Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team defeated No. 7 Carnegie Mellon for the second time this season by the score of 9-0 on Thursday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens defeated Carnegie Mellon 5-0 in the ITA National Championship earlier in the season and the Tartans have failed to score a point against the Sagehens this season.
Pomona-Pitzer started out sweeping the doubles competition to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen started out with a win in the No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win. Lea Lynn Yen and Caroline Casper followed up with an 8-6 win in the No. 2 doubles and Joy Kim and Arianna Chen finished off doubles with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 spot.
Kim led off the singles matches in the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 win and Casper also won the No. 2 singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Zhao kept the momentum going as she won her match in the No. 3 singles spot with a 6-3, 6-2 win. The Tartans almost got their only point of the match in the No. 4 singles match but Mae Coyiuto was able to hold off her opponent with a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-5 victory.
The Sagehens finished out the day with Arianna Chen getting a win in the No. 5 spot 6-4, 6-0 and Emily Chen closed out the matches with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot.
The Sagehens next take the court as they take on Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday, March 13th at 10:00 a.m.
