Women's Tennis: No. 6 Sagehens Dominant in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, CA – The No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team dominated the Occidental College Tigers in their SCIAC season opener, Saturday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex winning 9-0. The Sagehens then dropped a close match to Division II No. 24 Cal State Los Angeles.

Season Impact: The Sagehens begin the season 1-1.

No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer 9, Occidental 0

Doubles

Arianna Chen and Caroline Casper teamed up to beat Oxy's Lauren Hutkin and Maxine Krygier in the No. 1 match 8-0. Yurie Heard and Mae Coyiuto won the No. 2 match 8-1 and Maddie Gordon and Lucy Jiang won the No. 3 match 8-1.

Singles

Arianna Chen won the No.1 match against Samantha Farrell 6-3, 6-0. Sivani Doraiswami won the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-1. Emily Chen bested Nicole Castro 6-1, 6-0 in her match. 

Yurie Heard won the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-0. Jiang and Maddie Gordon each won their matchers 6-0, 6-0.

No. 24 Cal State Los Angeles 5, No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer 4

Doubles

Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen combined to beat Cal State LA's Iris Raileanu and Isabella Lopez 8-5.

Joy Kim and Maryann Zhao fell 8-1, and Grace Hruska and Emily Chen lost 8-1.

Singles

The Sagehens scored three singles wins over Cal State LA to nearly pull off the upset over the Division II Golden Eagles.

Caroline Casper beat Nozomi Matsuoka in the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-2. Maryann Zhao won the No. 2 match, beating  Kayleigh Hall 6-4, 6-2, and Mae Coyiuto won her the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-2.

Joy Kim came close in her match losing in three sets. 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

Next Match: The Sagehens host the Chapman Panthers next Saturday at 2 p.m.
