CLAREMONT, CA — The No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team swept the doubles and beat No. 12 Carnegie Mellon 7-2 Saturday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 7-2 overall. They have defeated three top-25 opponents this season.
The Sagehens started off with a 3-0 lead after dominant performances in all three doubles matches. Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen got the winning started for Pomona-Pitzer with a commanding 8-1 win in the No. 2 spot.
Joy Kim made her return to the Sagehens' lineup teaming up with Grace Hruska in the No. 3 doubles match. The pair scored a 8-4 win over Jamie Vizelman and Katie Lai. It was the first time the pair have played together since the fall. The duo won the ITA West Regional Doubles Title in October.
Casper, fresh off defeating the No. 1 ranked singles player in Division III, was her usual self, beating Nicholle Torres 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 match.
Just as dominant was Hruska. The junior kept the momentum from her doubles win and turned it into a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 5 match, giving Pomona-Pitzer a 5-0 lead and sealing the win.
Maddie Gordon put on a strong showing for the Sagehens. The senior from Dallas, Texas bested Katie Lai in the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-0.
Joy Kim made a solid return to singles play as well, rolling in the No. 4 match to a 6-2, 6-3 win.
Upcoming Schedule: The Sagehens have a tough upcoming schedule next facing No. 7 Amherst on Monday at 10 a.m., then facing No. 4 Bowdoin at 11 a.m. the next day.
