CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team defeated No.16 Trinity (Tx.) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Round Two of the NCAA Tournament at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Sagehens jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles after earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen got the first win of the afternoon at the No. 2 doubles spot 8-2 and Grace Hruska and Joy Kim won their match at the No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Sagehens only needed three singles matches to clinch their way to the Regional Finals.
Arianna Chen quickly earned a win at the No. 4 singles match as she defeated Zoe Kaffen 6-2, 6-0 to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead.
Mae Coyiuto found herself down early to Marie Lutz 5-0 in the first set at the No. 3 singles spot but Coyiuto rallied back to win the first set 7-6 and finished off Lutz 6-1 in set two to give the Sagehens a 4-1 advantage.
After dropping a match at No. 5 singles, Maryann Zhao clinched the match for the Sagehens at the No. 2 singles line. Zhao won her first set at 6-3 but fell in set two 6-3. After a back and forth third set, Zhao was able to earn the advantage and took set three 6-4 to seal the win for the Sagehens.
