CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team started off the ITA Indoor National Championships with an 8-1 win over Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon.
The Sagehens began the day taking two of the first three doubles matches as Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen started off with a big win at No. 1 doubles 8-1 followed by another win at the No. 3 spot as Caroline Casper and Shivani Doraiswami won their doubles match 8-2. Rebecca Salaway and Summer Garrison fought hard in what was a close match at No. 3 doubles but ultimately fell to the John Hopkins team 8-6.
Pomona-Pitzer went into singles play up 2-1 and dominated the individual competition as the swept all of the singles matches. Casper took a win at the No. 1 singles match defeating Anjie Kashyap by the scores of 6-3, 6-2. Zhao dropped her first set 7-5 but battled back with a big 6-2 win to force a third set where she won 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer went on to win in straight sets at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Garrison defeated her opponent 6-3 in set one and hard a tight second set but came out on top with a 7-6 win. Doraiswami and Emily Chen had impressive wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as Doraiswami won by the scores of 6-1, 6-0 and Chen defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0. Salaway was locked in a battle at the No. 6 singles with Chrissy Simon. Salaway took set one 6-3 but Simon came back and won set two 6-4. After a three sets of close tennis, Salaway came out with a 7-6 win to end the day for the Sagehens.
