CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis earned a trip to the ITA Indoor National Championship match after their 6-3 win in the Semifinals against University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Sagehens clinch a spot in the ITA indoor National Championship match for the third-straight season where they won it in 2016 and finished as the runner-ups last season.
Pomona-Pitzer fell behind after doubles as Chicago took two out of the first three matches. The sole doubles win for the Sagehens came at the No. 1 match as Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen won their match 8-3. Caroline Casper and Shivani Doraiswami fell in the No. 2 doubles match 8-2 and Rebecca Salaway and Jacinta Chen took the No. 3 doubles into a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 8-7 (9-0).
After falling behind during doubles play, the Sagehens shined during the singles competition as they only dropped one match. Casper cruised to a win in straight sets at the No. 1 singles spot by the scored of 6-1, 6-1 as well as straight set wins by Doraiswami at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3), Emily Chen at No. 5 (6-4, 6-3) and Jacinta Chen at No. 6 with a tie breaker win in the first set 7-6 (2-0) and a 6-2 win in the second set.
Summer Garrison won her singles match going three sets as she started out with a tough 7-5 win in set one and fell in a tie breaker in set two 7-6 (5-0) but then rallied back for a strong performance in set three with a 6-3 win to cap off the day for the Sagehens.
