Occidental Defeats Volleyball In Three Sets

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team shook off a sluggish start to battle Occidental tightly in the third set, but it still fell on the short end of a 3-0 sweep on Friday evening.

The loss drops the Sagehens to 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the SCIAC. Occidental improves to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play after winning both halves of the home-and-home series with Pomona-Pitzer.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23, as the Sagehens played their best volleyball at the end of the match, hitting .275 as a team in the third set (after recording only two kills in the first set). However, the Tigers scored the final two points of the third set to earn the narrow 25-23 win and prevent Pomona-Pitzer from extending the match to a fourth stanza.

Occidental hit .312 for the match, as the Tigers had only eight errors as a team. Logan Boyer-Hayse had 14 kills, while Alyssa Mort had 12 kills in 22 attempts with no errors. Senior Carolyn Hite (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the Sagehens with six kills in 20 attempts, while senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif.) had 21 digs.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action when it steps out of league play to face Chapman on Wednesday.
