Yamasaki Helps Sagehens Sweep Redlands

Claremont, Calif. - Freshman Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) managed a triple-double in only three sets as the Sagehens defeated Redlands 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-22, 25-23 as the Sagehens improved to 7-17 overall and 5-7 in the SCIAC with the win. Redlands falls to 3-21 overall and 2-10 in the SCIAC with the loss.

Yamasaki tallied 10 kills in only 19 attempts, and also added 15 assists and 10 digs, as she split time between the setter and outside hitter positions. Yamasaki played all four matches over the weekend at setter due to injuries, and she managed to cross the 200-kill, 200-dig, and 200-assist plateaus for the season all in a span of 24 hours.

The first set saw the Sagehens cruise to an easy 25-13 win as the team had 14 kills in 29 attempts with no errors. The second two sets were much closer, as Redlands was within 23-22 in the second set before two hitting errors gave the Sagehens a 2-0 lead.

The final set came right down to the final points, as sophomore Sophie Tweed-Simmons (Beverly Hills, Calif.) had a kill to make the score 24-22, but a service error brought the Bulldogs within a point of evening the set. Senior Carolyn Hite (Buffalo, N.Y.), though, was able to end the match with a tip kill over the top of the Redlands blockers.

Senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar, Calif.), who broke the school's record for career digs over the weekend, led the Sagehens in that department with 12, while freshman Kirea Mazzolini (Phoenix, Ariz.) added seven kills in 16 attempts and a team-high four blocks.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday when it travels to La Verne for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
