La Verne Knocks Volleyball From SCIAC Contention

La Verne, Calif. - Randi Taylor-Toomay had 11 kills, 12 digs and four aces as the La Verne Volleyball team captured a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening to knock the Sagehens out of postseason contention.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, 25-15, as La Verne improves to 16-11 overall and 6-6 in the SCIAC with the win. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 7-18 overall and 5-8 in the SCIAC, and is officially eliminated from the conference tournament.

Freshman outside hitter Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif.) got the Sagehens going early on with four kills in her first four attempts, as well as one block assist, during a 7-0 run that put Pomona-Pitzer ahead 8-3. With the score 14-9, La Verne used a 4-0 run to get back to within a single point, and then used a 3-0 run later in the set to move ahead 19-18, its first lead since it was 3-2 early. A Yamasaki kill ended the run temporarily, but Catie Logan had the final two kills for the Leopards as it closed out the set with a 25-22 win.

Yamasaki again had a fast start in the second set with three kills and an assist to stake the Sagehens to a 5-2 lead, but La Verne used two 6-0 runs to pull away. The first run turned an 8-7 Sagehen lead into a 13-8 deficit, and after Pomona-Pitzer took the next three points to get right back in it, the Leopards took control by scoring six straight points to go ahead 24-14 before settling for a 25-15 win.

The third set saw the Leopards jump out quickly to leads of 5-1 and 8-2. The Sagehens tried to get back in it, and got within 10-7 at one point, but La Verne was able to regroup and pull away for the 25-15 win.

Yamasaki finished with 10 kills in 20 attempts and added 11 assists for the Sagehens. Senior libero Heidi Leonard (Del Mar) added to her school record career dig total with 17. La Verne hit .290 as a team and had 11 service aces, while setter Krystal Castellanos had 29 assists.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday night for its season finale when it hosts Cal Lutheran at 7:30 p.m.
