Sagehens Fall On Road To Occidental

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Occidental Volleyball team hit .375 as it captured a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday evening. Game scores were 25-15, 25-20 and 25-18 in favor of the Tigers.

With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 7-7 on the year and 2-4 in the SCIAC after a difficult stretch of matches against three SCIAC teams that are a combined 31-8 on the year (11-3 Cal Lutheran, 10-2 Chapman and 10-3 Occidental). The Tigers improve to 3-2 in the SCIAC with the win (with their losses coming to Cal Lutheran and Chapman).

Occidental had 47 kills and only 11 hitting errors on the day, with setter Sarah Beene managing eight kills on 11 attempts (to go with 14 assists). Stephanie Gann had 12 kills and Alyssa Mort and Kasey Rose each added 10 for a balanced attack for the Tigers.

The first game saw Occidental jump out to a 9-3 lead and stretch the advantage up to double figures at 17-7 before settling for a 25-15 win. The second game was tighter, as the Sagehens rallied from a 21-14 deficit to get as close as 23-20, but back-to-back kills from Rose and Gann gave the Tigers the 25-20 win.

The third game saw Occidental take control early with a 6-0 run, turning a narrow 3-2 lead into a commanding 9-2 advantage. The Tigers led 20-9 before the Sagehens managed to creep back to within 24-18 on an ace from sophomore Dani Kritter (Culpepper, Va.), but a Gann kill ended the match as the Tigers hit .424 in the third game alone.

Freshman Emma Burdekin (Claremont, Calif./The Webb Schools - pictured) provided a lift for the Sagehens with three kills in five attempts. Freshman Michelle Schultz (Chicago, Ill.) finished with a team-high six kills for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens begin a stretch of three straight home matches when they entertain Redlands on Friday at 7:30 p.m. They will then face CMS on Tuesday night and La Verne on Oct. 5 at Voelkel Gymnasium.
