Sagehens Close Out With Win At Posada Royale

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team split its two matches for the second straight day at Cal Lutheran's Posada Royale Invitational, defeating Schriener 3-1 in the evening after falling to UC Santa Cruz 3-0 in the afternoon.

Game scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-19 vs. Schreiner, and 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 against UC Santa Cruz. With the split, the Sagehens move to 5-3 on the season after its two opening tournaments.

Junior Allie Frappier again had big numbers for the Sagehens, compiling 32 kills against Schriener in 65 attempts with only four errors. The 32 kills tied the total she had last weekend against Willamette, which was the second-highest single-match output in program history behind the school record of 35 that Joanne Nielson had in 1990 (which came in five sets).

In addition to breaking the Pomona-Pitzer record for most kills in a four-set match, Frappier also moved into the top 20 in Division III history, tying for 17th place with several others. The four-set record of 47 was set by Rockford's Sarah Mosher in 2003.

Junior middle hitter Kirea Mazzolini (pictured) had seven blocks in the match, while senior libero Beth Smilkstein had 20 digs. Junior Ellen Yamasaki also had a versatile outing with 20 assists and 12 digs, and sophomore Michelle Schultz chipped in with eight kills in 21 attempts and 16 digs.

The Sagehens will have 10 days off before they return to action in their SCIAC opener at La Verne on Sept. 17.
