First Set Comeback Propels Sagehens To 3-0 Win Over Whittier

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team won the final five points of the first set to win 26-24 and went on to take a 3-0 victory over Whittier in a SCIAC match on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-21, 25-12 as Pomona-Pitzer improves to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the SCIAC. Whitter falls to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Senior Allie Frappier led the Sagehens with 16 kills on the day, while senior Samantha Cahill (pictured) had four blocks and junior Michelle Schultz had 10 digs to lead the defense. Casie Lowden led Whittier with 10 kills.

The Poets led 24-21 and had three set points in the first set, but Ellen Yamasaki had a kill to fight off the first one. With sophomore Natalie Lindeman on her serve, two Whittier errors leveled the score at 24-24. Frappier then had a kill off a pass from Cahill to make give the Sagehens a set point, and Cahill and Frappier combined on a block to finish off the 5-0 run and take the first set 26-24.

Pomona-Pitzer led for most of the second set, but Whittier was within striking distance at 20-18 before freshman Kate Porter had back-to-back kills to give the Sagehens control. The teams exchanged points down the stretch, before an ace from freshman Jessica Finn finished it off at 25-21.

The third set saw the Sagehens take all the momentum from a deflated Whittier team and roar out to a 20-8 lead. Sophomore Sarah Gamble had two kills in three attempts to close out the 25-12 win in the third and complete the sweep.

The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow for a key road test against defending SCIAC Champion Cal Lutheran. The Regals were the national runner-up last year, coming one point away from winning the NCAA Division III Championship before falling in five sets. Pomona-Pitzer went five sets at Cal Lutheran last year, falling 15-13 in the fifth despite 32 kills from Frappier.
