Nazareth Surges Past Sagehens In Four Sets

Claremont, Calif. - The Nazareth Volleyball team used a late run in the fourth set to surge ahead and capture a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium as part of the La Verne Invitational. 

Set scores were 25-21, 12-25, 25-14, 25-21. With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 11-7 on the season, while Nazareth improves to 16-5 after also defeating Whittier at Voelkel Gymnasium 3-0 in its first match of the day (32-30 in the third set).

Nazareth used a 5-0 run in the fourth set to turn a 14-13 deficit into an 18-14 lead, capped off by a Maureen Thayer ace. Trailing 23-18, the Sagehens battled back to within 23-21 on two kills from Allie Frappier sandwiched around a kill from Kelli Derrah. However, Kassandra Buseck stopped the run with a kill, and then teamed with Jennifer Hicks on the clinching block. 

Frappier led the Sagehens with 15 kills, while Ellen Yamasaki added seven. Senior Samantha Cahill had an efficient day attacking with five kills in eight attempts, to go along with a team-high six blocks. Jessica Finn had 18 assists and 10 digs, while Michelle Schultz led the team in digs with 14. 

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action tomorrow with two matches, facing Widener at 11 a.m. and Endicott at 4 p.m.
