Pomona-Pitzer Sweeps Caltech, Closes Regular Season Tomorrow

Pasadena, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team took a quick 3-0 win over Caltech on Friday evening in its second-to-last match of the regular season.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-4, 25-10 as the Sagehens improve to 18-9 overall and 10-5 in the SCIAC with the win. Pomona-Pitzer, which had already clinched a postseason bid earlier this week, closes out the regular season with a Senior Day match against La Verne at 1 p.m. Caltech slips to 1-21 overall and 0-15 in the SCIAC with the loss.

The Sagehens had trouble getting separation early in the first set, as the score was 16-14 midway through before Pomona-Pitzer was able to pull away for a 25-17 win, capping off the set with a kill from senior Allie Frappier

The second set was entirely different, as Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the serve of freshman setter Jessica Finn (pictured), who had five assists during the run (three to sophomore Kelli Derrah). The Sagehens continued to extend their margin and won the set 25-4 as junior Emma Burdekin closed it out with a block and a kill on consecutive points.

After Caltech pulled to within 7-6 in the third set, the Sagehens went on a 11-1 run for a 18-7 lead, with sophomore Natalie Lindeman tallying four service aces in a span of five points to cap off the run. Senior Kirea Mazzolini capped off the match with a kill and a 25-10 win.

The Sagehens were well-balanced, as Frappier led with six kills in one set, while sophomore Stephanie Sun had five kills in eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. Finn finished with 15 assists and three aces, while sophomore Elizabeth Sun had 12 assists.

Tomorrow's home match against La Verne will serve as Senior Day for the program's five seniors, Frappier, Mazzolini, Ellen Yamasaki, Dani Kritter, and Samantha Cahill, who will be honored prior to the match.
