Volleyball: Sagehens Open Season with Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Sagehens started the season on the right foot, winning their opening game 3-1 against Rhodes College, then battling to five games in a loss against Union College.

Pomona-Pitzer finishes the Pacific Coast Classic tomorrow with games against St. John Fisher at 9:00 a.m. and Trinity University at 1:30 p.m.

Match 1: Pomona-Pitzer 3, Rhodes 1

Freshman Isabel Kelly made a big impression in her first collegiate game, leading all players with 14 kills and hitting .500, helping give the Sagehens a 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15 win. 

Julia Zwaal followed right behind with nine kills and 19 digs. Zwaal, a sophomore, and Kelly lead a Pomona-Pitzer team that features 10 underclassmen.

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and Christine Covode each had five kills. Addo-Ashong also had two assists, four digs, and a block. 

Jessica Finn spread the ball around finishing the game with 25 assists. 

Stephanie Sun, a second team All-SCIAC selection last year, had six kills.

Match 2: Union College 3, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Saghens kept the momentum from their earlier game and ran out to a 25-14 set one win. But Union College battled back forcing five sets to win the match 14-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 15-11.

Zwaal had another big game leading all players with 17 kills to go along with her 12 digs. Kelly finished with nine kills.

Natalie Martin had a big game on the defensive end with 26 kills. 

Jessica Finn finished with 29 assists and 10 digs and freshman setter Jackie Roland chipped in with 11.
