THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Jessica Finn had 22 assists, Julia Zwaal put down 14 kills with nine digs, and the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team, led the defending National Champion Regals late in the second set.
But Cal Lutheran stormed back, defeating the Sagehens in three sets Tuesday night.
Season Impact: The Sagehens fall to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the SCIAC.
Cal Lutheran improves to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in SCIAC play.
Set Scores: 25-13, 25-17, 25-19
The Sagehens were a point away from a set win, leading 24-22 in a back-and-fourth second set that saw neither team lead by more than four points. But Cal Lutheran rallied back, taking advantage of a Sagehens' attack error and ending the set on a block by Michelle Lawerence and Sarah Pappas.
Pomona-Pitzer took a 15-11 lead in the second after back-to-back blocks by Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and Kate Porter. Addo-Ashong and Porter had an effective night defensively with Addo-Ashong leading all players with with seven blocks, and Porter adding six.
The Sagehens again had a chance in the third set, tying the game at 15-15 off a Sarah Gamble kill. Pomona-Pitzer then took a 18-17 lead over the No.7 team in the country following a Regals' attack error.
Next Match: The Sagehens host the Chapman Panthers this Friday at 7 p.m. Pomona-Pitzer looks to rebound from their 3-0 defeat in Orange earlier this year.
