CLAREMONT, Calif. – Isabel Kelly had a team-high 13 kills, Julia Zwaal added 12, and the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team found their rhythm in a four-set win over the Whittier College Poets Saturday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to over .500 with a 10-9 overall record and 6-5 in SCIAC play.
The Poets drop to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the SCIAC
First Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Whittier 18
Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong was on fire in the the first set, hitting an outstanding .636, knocking down seven kills including four unassisted.
The freshman also had one of her two solo blocks to give the Sagehens a 19-15 lead. Addo-Ashong finished the match with nine kill, tying her career-high.
Second Set: Whittier 28, Pomona-Pitzer 26
Gamble finished the match with six kills and a block. Finn was all over the court in the match, totalling a season-high 39 assists with four kills, an ace, 12 digs, and a block.
Third Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Whittier 18
Stephanie Sun and Zwaal each had four kills and the Sagehens combined for three aces in a set that was never in question.
Sun had her fifth double-digit kill game, finishing with 10 and 17 digs.
Fourth Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Whittier 23
Kelly led the Sagehens in the final set, putting down six kills. Pomona-Pitzer added three more aces.
After the Poets tied the set at 23-23, the Sagehens responded with back-to-back kills, first by Sun, and then by Kelly on an assist by Sophie Janssen to end the game.
Next Match: The Sagehens hit the road next Tuesday to play the Redlands Bulldogs in a 7 p.m game.
