Volleyball: Sagehens Fall At Home To La Verne 3-1

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team fell to Southern California Intercollegoate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent No. 15 La Verne 3-1 on Friday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Set Scores: (29-27, 16-25, 15-25, 21-25)

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 5-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play while La Verne improves to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play this season.

The Sagehens were led by junior Julia Zwaal who had a team-high 15 kills in the loss while sophomore Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and junior Sophie Janssen chipped in with 11 kills each.

Freshman Britnie Casillas led the team with 20 assists and senior Jessica Finn finished right behind her with 19 assists while senior Natalie Martin led the team with 21 digs.

The Sagehens came out and traded points with the Leopards throughout the beginning of the match. After La Verne took a slight lead the Sagehens battled back late to send the game into extra points. Pomona-Pitzer rallied in extra points and took set one 29-27.

The Leopards came out in the second set and jumped out to a 10-3 lead and refused to let the Sagehens battle back as they won the set by nine points to tie the match at 1-1.

Much like set two, the Leopards jumped out to a large lead early on. Pomona-Pitzer was unable to stop the momentum of the Leopards as they ended the set on a 10-4 run to take a 2-1 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer came back in the third set and tied the game at 21-21 late but the Leopards took advantage of back to back errors by the Sagehens and followed up with two-straight kills to end the match and take a win over Pomona-Pitzer.
