CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 3-2 in five sets on Tuesday afternoon.

Season impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 6-15 overall and 3-6 in SCIAC play.
This is the sixth time out of the last seven games that the Sagehens have come out and won the first set against their opponents but are just 2-5 during that stretch. Before tonight's contest the Sagehens were only in one other five-set match this season where they defeated Cal Lutheran at home.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Isabel Kelly who led the team with 12 kills while Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and Kate Porter each had seven and Kayla Krilove chipped in with six. Jessica Finn led the Sagehens with 16 assists and Natalie Martin tallied a team-high 13 digs.
The Sagehens came out behind against the Tigers early in the first set but an eight-point run gave Pomona-Pitzer a 14-8 lead after a block by Krilove. The Tigers battled back to cut the lead down to just two points at 23-21 but the Sagehens took set one after an attack error gave them the 25-23 win.
Pomona-Pitzer started the second set with a 5-0 run but the Tigers took 19 of the next 24 points and held a commanding 19-10 lead in set two. Oxy went on to close out the Sagehens 25-16 and tied the score at 1-1.
The Sagehens came out and led again early as they started the third set on an 11-5 run after a kill by Kelly. Occidental came back to cut the lead down to two points late at 19-17 but Pomona-Pitzer ended the set with six-straight points to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set began close with the Tigers holding a slight 9-8 lead but the Tigers went on a big run again as they took 14 of the next 15 points to take a 23-9 lead and went on to force a fifth set.
After forcing a fifth and final set the Sagehens and Tigers began tied at 8-8 until two errors by the Sagehens gave the Tigers a 10-8 lead. Pomona-Pitzer got back a point after a kill by Addo-Ashong but the Tigers notched four-straight points to take a 14-9 lead. The Sagehens got the serve back after a service error by Occidental but the Tigers scored on the very next play to win set five 15-10 and earned a win over the Sagehens.
