Women's Volleyball: Sagehens Drop Road Match to Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team took a tough loss on Friday night, falling to Cal Lutheran on the road 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23). The Sagehens stumbled in the opening set as the Regals offense controlled to a comfortable victory, but Pomona-Pitzer battled closely in the final two sets to stay alive. Unfortunately, the Regals persevered for the victory. Julia Zwaal led the team with nine kills while Sophie Janssen reached for 21 digs. Isabel Kelly and Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong co-led the team with two assisted blocks each.

Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 12-15 overall and 9-6 in the SCIAC. They currently sit in the fifth place in the conference standings.

Pomona-Pitzer jumped to a quick 4-1 lead in the opening set after Addo-Ashong, Brooke Carlson, and Zwaal scored off a kill followed by a bad set from the Regals. However, the Regals battled back to tie it 5-5 and later broke out on a 6-0 run to lead 11-6. Cal Lutheran never looked back as they broke out with a 4-0 run to extend the lead 16-9. The Sagehens looked to rally and managed to score three consecutive points to cut the deficit 20-15. However, the rally came too late as the Regals closed out the set with five straight points.

The two sides battled closely in the second set, going on short runs, but failing to capitalize. With the Regals ahead 7-6, they managed to extend their lead with four straight points to lead 11-6. Trailing 15-11, Kayla Krilove brought the Sagehens back to life after scoring on a big spike off a toss by Britnie Casillas. Sara Ryerson followed up with a service ace and the Regals followed with two straight attacking errors. Kelly followed with a spike to put the Sagehens ahead 16-15. The two sides battled closely but with the score tied 20-20, the Regals rattled off three straight points to lead 23-20. The Regals closed out the set to lead 2-0.

The third set started off similarly to the second set, with both sides within striking distance of one another. However, with a narrow 9-8 lead, the Regals broke out on a 5-0 run to lead 14-8. The Sagehens tried to muster a comeback to stay alive, going on a 6-1 run to cut the lead 16-15. The Regals tried to hold off Pomona-Pitzer as the two sides traded points. Leading 20-18, the Regals managed to score three straight to come close within winning. Trailing 24-19, the Sagehens rallied to stay alive as a kill by Kelly and back-to-back combined blocks from Addo-Ashong and Kelly cut the deficit 24-22. Janssen followed with the service to bring the Sagehens within one. Unfortunately, the Regals scored the match-winning kill to seal it.

Up Next: The Sagehens will look to honor seniors Julia Zwaal and Sophie Janssen in tomorrow's final regular season home game against University of La Verne at 4:00 p.m. There will be a special senior night presentation before the opening serve.
