Cal Baptist Wins Back-And-Forth Contest As Sagehens Drop Two

Claremont, Calif. - Mallory Montano scored both of her goals in the final three minutes, including the tiebreaker with 35 seconds left, as the Cal Baptist Women's Water Polo team took an 11-10 decision from Pomona-Pitzer on Friday evening at Haldeman Pool.

Pomona-Pitzer, which also fell 15-4 to UC Irvine earlier in the day, falls to 6-8 on the year with the two losses.

After the teams were tied 4-4 at halftime, neither team led by more than one goal in the entire second half. The Sagehens answered Cal Baptist leads at 5-4, 6-5, and 7-6 before taking their first lead f the game with 5:32 left on a goal from freshman Alyssa Woodward.

The Lancers, though, scored the next two goals as Laura Kocsis found the net with 3:28 left, and Christina Webb scored with 2:42 to go. Once again the Sagehens answered as Mahalia Prater-Fahey scored 14 seconds later to tie the score 9-9 for Pomona-Pitzer.

However, Montano scored the first of her late goals with 2:13 to go. After Woodward tied the score in a man-up situation with 1:27 left, the Sagehens had a breakaway and Cal Baptist was forced to commit a foul resulting in a five-meter shot with 48 seconds left. Camryn Rogers, though, tipped Woodward's shot off the crossbar, and after a timeout, Montano scored the game-winner with just 35 seconds left.

Sarah Wescott drew an exclusion with 20 seconds left to give the Sagehens one final chance, but Kerstin Henshall fired wide from the left side, and the Lancers were able to kill the clock.

Pomona-Pitzer trailed 4-0 early in the second quarter, but Annie Oxborough-Yankus (pictured - photo by Sricharitha Mullaguru) scored three man-up goals in the last 5:40 of the half, tying the game up with 31 seconds left to bring the Sagehens even at 4-4.

Oxborough-Yankus had three goals, and Hopkins, Henshall and Woodward each added two for the Sagehens.

In the first game of the day, freshmen Vicky Gyorffy and Woodward scored first quarter goals to give Pomona-Pitzer an early 2-1 lead, but UC Irvine scored six unanswered to take control and cruise to a 15-4 win.

Amy Riddering scored two goals in the last 1:13 of the first quarter, including the tiebreaking goal with one second left, to give the Anteaters the lead for good. Sarah Westcott broke the 6-0 UC Irvine run with a second quarter goal to make it 7-3, but the Sagehens managed just one more goal (a Woodward tally in the third quarter).

Pomona-Pitzer concludes play at the Claremont Convergence tomorrow with home matches against Siena (2 p.m.) and Whittier(6 p.m.).
