Claremont, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif. - pictured) had four of Pomona-Pitzer's five goals, but the Sagehens Women's Water Polo team fell 6-5 to Brown on Wednesday evening at Haldeman Pool.
Woodward's fourth goal from long distance tied the score at 5-5 with 1:33 to go, but Brown's Madison Pepper answered just 20 seconds later with the winning goal, her third of the game. Evan Cranston had a save in the final seconds to secure the win for the Bears (her eighth).
The game did not begin as it would be a defensive struggle, as Pepper scored just 25 seconds in and Woodward answered on a five-meter goal just 1:13 into the game to make the score 1-1. However, the teams would go over eight minutes without scoring again, before Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) found the net for the Sagehens with 6:23 left in the second.
Sarah Presant scored at the 4:59 mark of the second to make the score 2-2, but Woodward answered on the next possession to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-2 lead at the half.
Each team had one goal in the third quarter, as Emily McNamara found the net to knot the score up 3-3, before Woodward gave the Sagehens the lead back at 4-3 with 2:18 to go in the third. Brown would take a 5-4 lead with 2:18 to go in the fourth on a Pepper goal, before Woodward answered, and Pepper answered back with the winner.
Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) had eight saves for the Sagehens in a losing cause.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action for a pair of road SCIAC matches at Caltech and Occidental on Saturday.
