Women's Water Polo Takes Down No. 1 Oxy In Top-Two Showdown, Defeats Caltech

Los Angeles, Calif. - Freshman Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.) had two of her three goals in overtime as the No. 2-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated No. 1 Occidental 15-13 on Saturday afternoon in a battle of the top two teams in Division III.

Pomona-Pitzer also added 15-6 win over Caltech later in the day to complete the two-game sweep to start its SCIAC sweep.

With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 12-16 on the year (7-0 against Division III teams), and 2-0 in official SCIAC games (Pomona-Pitzer has defeated Redlands, CMS and Whittier in non-conference games earlier this year).

In the Oxy match, freshman Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.), who had been held scoreless throughout regulation and the first overtime, ultimately provided the difference in the match as she scored both goals in the second extra session to break a 13-13 tie and give Pomona-Pitzer the 15-13 win.

Gyorrfy was nearly the hero in regulation, as she scored with 1:18 to go to break a 10-10 tie and give the Sagehens an 11-10 lead that nearly held up. Occidental, though, was able to knot the score from seemingly out of nowhere in the final second as Tessa Bailey-Findley heaved a long arching shot from mid-pool that bounced off the crossbar and just far enough away from Pomona keeper Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) for Lindsay Albino to backhand it into the net just in time to even the score at 11 and send the game into overtime.

Bailey-Findley then had the first goal of overtime to give Occidental a 12-11 lead, but Gyoffry stepped up with back-to-back goals 12 seconds apart to get the Sagehens back in front 13-12 and take the momentum back away from the Tigers. Occidental evened the score at 13-13 with 26 seconds left in the first overtime, but Woodward broke the tie for good with a five-meter shot with 2:10 to play, then added an insurance goal with 1:20 to go in a 6-on-5.

Pomona-Pitzer had a balanced offense, as freshman Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) had three goals in the first half, and freshman Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) added two. Senior Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.) scored three times in the third quarter, and senior Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn.) added two goals in the second half as well.

The Caltech match saw even more players get into the scoring act, as sophomore Brenda Iglesias (South Gate, Calif.) tied for team-high honors with three goals, matching Prater-Fahey's total. Sophomore Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) and freshman Chrissie Alving-Trinh (Fresno, Calif.) joined Wesctott in scoring two goals apiece.

Pomona-Pitzer led 3-0 after the first quater on goals from Oxborough-Yankus, Kerstin Henshall and Wescott and methodically built its lead to 7-3 at the half and 10-4 after three quarters.

The Sagehens will be back in action on Wednesday for a road match at Redlands.
