Women's Water Polo Wins Twice At La Verne Invitational

La Verne, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer won two non-conference games over SCIAC teams on Saturday, defeating host La Verne 14-11 and Redlands 6-3 at the La Verne Invitational.

With the wins, Pomona-Pitzer levels its record at 2-2 on the young season after losing to two tpo 20 teams in its opening weekend at UC Santa Barbara, while also extending its winning streak against SCIAC teams (both league and non-league) to 15 matches.

The Sagehens won two different ways, as they prevailed in an offensive shootout against La Verne, and then won a defensive struggle against Redlands in a rematch of last year's triple-overtime thriller in the SCIAC Championship game.

Sophomore Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) had three goals in the opening game against La Verne and two key ones against Redlands, both after the Bulldogs cut the Sagehen lead to one goal. Her second gave Pomona-Pitzer a 4-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) stretched the lead to 5-2 early in the fourth quarter, and after Redlands was able to get back within 5-3, sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) capped off the scoring with a goal to make the score 6-3, and the Sagehen defense led by senior goalie Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) was able to close the door the rest of the way.

In the opening game, La Verne jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Prater-Fahey and Woodward scored to even the game up at 2-2. The Leopards built leads of 4-2 and 5-3, but Westcott scored back-to-back goals to get the Sagehens back level.

With the score tied 8-8 midway through the third quarter, junior Kerstin Henshall (Moraga, Calif.) gave Pomona-Pitzer the lead for good, and Prater-Fahey and Westcott followed with goals to stretch the lead to 11-8.

La Verne bounced back with the next two goals, but Prater-Fahey stopped the momentum with a key goal and then capped off a 3-0 run with her fourth of the match, to make the score 14-10 and seal the win.

Pomona-Pitzer will have three weeks off before resuming play at the Posada Royale Invitational at Cal Lutheran on March 1-2.
