Pomona-Pitzer Pulls Away From Chapman

Claremont, Calif. - Juniors Sarah Westcott (four goals), Alyssa Woodward (three) and Chrissie Alving-Trinh (three) combined for 10 goals and junior Sallie Walecka added 15 saves in goal as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team pulled away from Chapman for a 14-7 win on Wednesday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 19-13 overall and 6-1 in the SCIAC, setting up a battle with CMS on Saturday for the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament. Chapman falls to 9-21 overall and 2-5 in the SCIAC.

Senior Brenda Iglesias (pictured with Head Coach Alex Rodriguez) was honored before the game for Senior Day, as the lone senior on the 2014 team playing in her final match at Haldeman Pool.

The score was tied 3-3 after one quarter and 4-4 early in the second quarter, when Alving Trinh scored back to back goals to give the Sagehens a 6-4 lead at intermission. Pomona-Pitzer extended the margin up to 10-6 at the end of three quarters, and Walecka had eight of her saves after halftime, including one on a penalty shot, to prevent the Panthers from building any momentum.

Juniors Mahalia Prater-Fahey, Vicky Gyorffy, and Carter Grant had goals for Pomona-Pitzer, while freshman Hope Grant was the only non-junior to score.

The Sagehens will face CMS across the street on Saturday in their regular season finale at 11 a.m. at Axelrood Pool. The SCIAC Tournament will then take place at Whittier next weekend.
