Offense Heats Up As Sagehens Fly Past Redlands

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team used an 8-0 run that carried from the first quarter to the third as it broke the game open and went on to take a 16-5 win over Redlands on Saturday at Haldeman Pool. 

With the win, Pomona-Pitzer is now 12-9 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC, remaining even with CMS in the loss column as the only two unbeatens. Redlands falls to 3-22 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss. 

Freshman Morgan McCracken led the Pomona-Pitzer offense with five goals, while seniors Alyssa Woodward, Sarah Westcott and Vicky Gyorffy each had two, along with sophomore Hope Grant. Sophomores Chessa Burke and Christina Williamson and senior Carter Grant accounted for the other goals. 

Gyorffy and Hope Grant scored goals to finish off the first quarter after Redlands scored two straight to tie the score 2-2. Westcott then had back-to-back goals in the second to stretch the lead to 6-2 and McCracken scored her second to make the score 7-2 at the break. Hope Grant scored on the first second-half possession and was followed by Burke and Carter Grant to put it away at 10-2. 

Ahsha Earwood finished the game with nine saves for the Sagehens in goal, picking up the win, as Redlands scored its fifth goal with 18 seconds left on a penalty shot.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday when it plays two road matches at Caltech at 4 p.m. and Azusa Pacific at 7 p.m.
