Sagehens Celebrate Senior Day With 10-Goal Win

Claremont, Calif. - Senior All-American attacker Alyssa Woodward matched her career high with six goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team pulled away for a 15-5 win over La Verne on Saturday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

With the win, the Sagehens are now 15-9 overall and 6-0 in the SCIAC, as they prepare to face CMS on Wednesday on the road to likely determine the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament, which will be held at Pomona-Pitzer on April 24-26.

The match was preceded by a Senior Day ceremony to honor the seven seniors (pictured, photo by CC Rozen) in the Pomona-Pitzer Class of 2015: Woodward, Sarah Westcott, Mahalia Prater-Fahey, Sallie Walecka, Vicky Gyorffy, Carter Grant, and Chrissie Alving-Trinh. The seven seniors have been a part of three SCIAC titles in their first three seasons and will try to make it four-for-four at home in two weeks.

La Verne kept the match close early, tying the score 2-2 midway through the first quarter. Woodward broke the tie, and she and Prater-Fahey were the only goal scorers in the second quarter as the Sagehens took a 5-2 lead into the break.

The second half saw Pomona-Pitzer's offense click with 10 goals (five in each quarter). Woodward and Westcott started the third quarter with goals to make the score 7-2 and stretch the Sagehen run to 5-0. After La Verne stopped the run, sophomore Hope Grant scored for Pomona-Pitzer and Westcott and Alving-Trinh finished off the third with goals to make the score 10-3.

Westcott and junior Megan Snow each had two goals to support Woodward, who played goalie in the final minute but did not face a shot. Ahsha Earwood played the first 31 minutes and had seven saves, while La Verne's Hailey Westwood had eight.

Pomona-Pitzer travels to CMS on Wednesday to face the Athenas in a battle of SCIAC unbeatens.
