Sagehens Rally Late To Finish 8-0 Regular Season In SCIAC

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Senior Sarah Westcott (pictured) broke a 4-4 tie with 1:06 remaining as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the fourth quarter to earn a 5-4 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday to finish the regular season undefeated in SCIAC play.

With the win, the Sagehens are now 17-9 overall and 8-0 in the SCIAC and will be the top seed in the conference tournament next weekend, which they will host at Haldeman Pool from Friday-Sunday. Cal Lutheran falls to 7-18 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Sophomore goalie Ahsha Earwood had a big day with 11 saves to keep the Sagehens in it, as Cal Lutheran's defense held a high-powered Pomona-Pitzer offense to only two goals with five minutes left in regulation. However, the Sagehens finally found the net down the stretch, as senior Alyssa Woodward scored with 4:41 to play to cut the lead to 4-3, and sophomore Christina Williamson added the tying goal with 2:47 to go.

The Sagehens drew an ejection with 1:09 left, and three seconds later, Westcott converted with her second goal of the day to break the 4-4 tie. The Pomona-Pitzer defense then held on for the last two Cal Lutheran possessions.

Gina Merry had 13 saves for the Regals to nearly help her team pull off the upset. Megan Snow had a first quarter goal for Pomona-Pitzer, while Jordan Card had both Cal Lutheran goals in the first half, joining Westcott as the only players with two.

The Sagehens will open play at the SCIAC Tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m., taking on the winner of the morning's play-in game between eighth-seeded Occidental and ninth-seeded Caltech.
