RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's Water Polo team opened up its 2016 season with a loss to Cal State Northridge 13-5 in the first match of the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament hosted by Riverside.
The Sagehens dropped their second match of the day 12-6 to Fresno Pacific to open up the season 0-2.
Pomona-Pitzer started out with a 4-0 deficit after the first quarter of play against CSUN. The Sagehens responded with two goals in the second, one by Molly Edison and one by Hope Grant, but CSUN matched the Sagehens with two goals of their own to end the second quarter with a 6-2 lead.
The Matadors came out in the third and scored four goals, three of which by Madeleine Sanchez who tallied seven total goals on the day.
Pomona-Pitzer scored one goal in the third by Samantha Martinez and two goals in the fourth quarter as Jocelyn Castro and Kahea Kahauelelio tallied one goal each but the Sagehens could not comeback against CSUN as they dropped their first match of the year.
The Sagehens then matched up against Fresno Pacific in game two of the CBU Mini-Tournament.
Edison and Megan Snow led the Sagehens in game two with two goals each.
The Sunbirds came out with a big offense in the first quarter as they cashed in on four goals by four different players. The Sagehens tallied two goals in the first by Edison and Natalie Hill.
Fresno Pacific added to its lead in the second as they outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the quarter with Snow scoring the lone goal for Pomona-Pitzer as the Sagehens trailed 6-3 going into the third.
The Sunbirds came out and scored four goals in the third and two goals in the fourth as they pulled away from the Sagehens in the second half.
Edison and Castro each tallied a goal in the third quarter and Snow cashed in on the only goal for the Sagehens in the fourth quarter as Pomona-Pitzer finished the day 0-2 in the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament.
The Sagehens next travel to Whittier for a game against Azusa Pacific on Saturday, February 6th at 12 p.m.
