CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 14-10 on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Jocelyn Castro and junior Christina Williamson who each tallied a game-high four goals. Sophomore Morgan McCracken also tallied a hat-trick with three goals on the day.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an early lead as they netted three-straight goals to start the game from freshman Anna Yu, Castro and McCracken to take a 3-0 advantage. The Athenas responded with two goals of their own late in the first but the Sagehens held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Much like the first quarter, Pomona-Pitzer started the second with three goals in a row coming off of Castro, Williamson and freshman Natalie Hill and held a 6-2 lead early in the second period. The Athenas found the back of the net twice in the quarter and the Sagehens added one from McCracken late in the first half to take a 7-4 lead going into halftime.
CMS and Pomona-Pitzer came out in the second half and played an even third quarter as both teams added four goals to their totals. Yu and Williamson scored their second goals of the game and Castro found the back of the net twice in the quarter as the Sagehens held an 11-8 lead going into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer held off the Athenas in the final quarter of play as Williamson netted two more goals and McCracken scored her third goal of the game as the Sagehens won their third-straight SCIAC game of the season.
The Sagehens will play in their final regular season game of the year as they host Cal Lutheran on Saturday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m.
