REDLANDS, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team defeated Cal Lutheran 7-3 in round one of the SCIAC Championships on Friday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatics Center.

The Sagehens were led by sophomore Jocelyn Castro who tallied a team-high two goals in the win.

The first half was a tightly contested defensive battle between the two teams as only three goals were scored in the first half between the two teams.

The Sagehens got one the board first as junior Christina Williamson found the back of the net to give Pomona-Pitzer an early 1-0 lead. Cal Lutheran responded just under a minute later with a goal of their own by Kristi McGee to tie the game at 1-1.

Freshman Kyla Pickell scored her only goal of the day late in the first quarter to give the Sagehens a 2-1 advantage over the Regals heading into the second quarter.

The offense stayed quiet in the second quarter for both teams as the Sagehens kept a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer opened up the scoring in the third quarter as they outscored the Regals 4-1. Sophomore Morgan McCracken and freshman Anna Yu scored early in the third quarter before the Regals added one of their own as the Sagehens took a 4-2 lead with 5:48 left in the quarter.

The Sagehens tallied two more goals in the final two minutes of the third as Castro and junior Chessa Burke scored to extend the lead to 6-2 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens will play tomorrow against No. 3 seed La Verne at 1:45 p.m. at the Thompson Aquatics Center.
