Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Fall To 0-2 In UCSB Winter Invitational

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team opened up their 2017 schedule with a 15-5 loss to UC Santa Barbara and a 20-3 loss to #10 University of the Pacific on Saturday afternoon at UCSB.

Season Impact: After day one of the UCSB Winter Invitational, the Sagehens start the season 0-2 overall.

The Sagehens were led by junior Christina Williamson who tallied two goals in the loss. Junior Morgan McCracken and freshmen Crystal Huang and Sasha Newton each had one.

The Gauchos were led by Taylor Shore and Natalie Selin who each had a hat-trick with three goals apiece.

UCSB got out to a quick start in the first period as the Gauchos jumped out to a quick 5-0 run to start the first. The Sagehens got on the board late in the first period as Newton found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal of her career as the Sagehens trailed 5-1 at the end of the first.

The Sagehens and Gauchos alternated goals throughout the second quarter as McCracken and Williamson each scored their first goals of the game but Pomona-Pitzer faced an 8-3 deficit at halftime.

UCSB started out the second half with four-straight goals to extend the lead to 12-3 and then Williamson broke the run with her second goal of the game with 51 seconds to go in the third period.

Huang started out the fourth period with her first collegiate goal of her career off of an assist from senior Hope Grant but the Sagehens couldn't come back from their fourth quarter deficit and fell to the Gauchos is game one of the double header.

The Sagehens then took on University of the Pacific in their second game. Pomona-Pitzer was led by the trio of junior Jocelyn Castro, sophomore Anna Yu and McCracken who each tallied one goal.

University of the Pacific was led by Rachel Kreiger who had a game-high four goals in the win for the Tigers.

Pacific started out the first period with the first two goals of the game but Yu found the back of the net for a power play goal to cut the deficit down to 2-1 with 3:45 remaining in the first.

The Sagehens scored two goals in the second quarter as McCracken and Castro each scored their first goals of the game but the Sagehens trailed 12-3 at the half.

Pomona-Pitzer was stopped by the Tigers' defense in the second half as the Sagehens dropped game two of the UCSB Winter Invitational.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to Riverside as they will compete in the Lancer Tournament on Saturday, January 28th as they will face CSU Bakersfield at 10:15 a.m. and Loyola Marymount at 3:15 p.m.
