CLAREMONT, CA — Jocelyn Castro led all players with five goals, the Sagehens took the early lead, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team scored an 11-4 non-conference win against George Washington, Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to 6-11 overall this season.
Castro got the scoring started early for the Sagehens, finding the back of the net less than a minute into the game. She added her second goal of the game a minute later. The Sagehens ended the first quarter up 5-1.
Castro again found the back of the net off a Natalie Hill assist with just two second left in the half to take a 6-2 lead and the momentum into the break. Hill finished the game with two assists. Anna Yu, Christina Williamson, Burke, and Erica Halaszynski each added one assist.
The Sagehens added five more goals in the second half to put the final at 11-4.
Bucknell 11, Pomona-Pitzer 10
The Sagehens stayed even the Bison throughout the entire match, but Bucknell found the back of the net with just 16 second remaining in regulation to get away with a win.
Natalie Hill got the Sagehens on the board first, scoring early in the opening period to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead at the end of one quarter.
The Sagehens added four more goals in the second, including one by Bella Villa, but Bucknell added five of their own to go into the break tied 5-5. Both teams stayed even in the third each scoring three.
With four and a half minutes left to play and the Sagehens trailing by two, Anna Yu found the back of the net off a Hope Grant assist to cut the deficit to one. Less than two minutes later, Williamson drilled a shot past the goalie to even the game at 10-10. But Bucknell's Colleen Barron came through with the late game heroics to seal the victory for the Bison.
Ahsha Earwood finished the game with eight saves.
Next Game: The Sagehens will face George Washington again this Friday at the Loyola Marymount Tournament at 8 a.m. Pomona-Pitzer will take on the host Lions later that day at 1 p.m.
