CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Redlands 15-3 and fell to No. 19 Hartwick 11-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Season Impact: The Sagehens move to 11-17 overall and improve to 4-1 in SCIAC play with the win over Redlands.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kyla Pickell who broke out for a season-high five goals in the win. Junior Jocelyn Castro and sophomore Nohea Kahaulelio each had a multi-goal game as well with two goals each.
Junior goalkeeper Morgan Stockham got the win for the Sagehens as she tallied three saves and one steal.
The Bulldogs were led by Brianna O'Dea, Rachel Nelson and Kolby Kahahawai who each had one goal in the loss.
The Sagehens came out with an impressive offensive performance in the first half the Bulldogs as they outscored Redlands 9-2.
Pomona-Pitzer scored five of those goals in the first quarter as junior Morgan McCracken led the game off with a goal followed by three more by the Sagehens by Castro, Kahaulelio and Hill to begin the game up 4-0. Sophomore Anna Yu also got on the board in the first but the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with two goals late in the first to cut the lead to 5-2 heading into the second quarter.
Stockham posted a shutout in the second period and the Sagehens offense went to work with four more goals from Castro, Kahaulelio and two from Pickell to hold a 9-2 lead at the half.
Senior Hope Grant got the scoring going for the Sagehens as she opened up the second half with a goal just 39 seconds in to extend the Sagehens lead to 10-2. Pomona-Pitzer added two more in the third from Pickell and Kahaulelio to close out the third with a 12-2 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the day outscoring Redlands 3-1 in the fourth with goals from Pickell and freshman Sasha Newton as the Sagehens cruised to their fourth SCIAC win of the season.
The Hawks were led by Lena Kotanchyan who had a game-high four goals in the win for the Hawks.
The Hawks started out on top as they scored the first goal of the game just over a minute into the first quarter. Hartwick started the first quarter with three-straight goals until the Sagehens scored their only goal of the quarter as Martinez found the back of the net to cut the lead down to 3-1. The Hawks ended the quarter with a goal with just four seconds left on the game clock to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the second.
The Sagehens opened up the second quarter with a goal by Castro to cut the lead down to just 4-2 but the Hawks took advantage of a power play and added one more before the half to push the lead to 6-2 at the half.
The Sagehens added one goal in the third as Burke found the back of the net for her only goal of the game but the Sagehens couldn't come back against the Hawks as they fell in game two of their doubleheader.
