CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival CMS 11-5 on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-5 overall and now 2-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Jocelyn Castro who notched her fourth hat-trick of the season with a game-high four goals in the win. Kahea Kahaulelio and Janelle Lewis also had multi-goal games with two goals each in the win.
The Sagehens got off to a nice start in the first half as they traded goals with CMS early in the first with Bella Villa opening up the game with an early goal followed by a CMS goal just under 30 seconds later to tie the match at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the first with goals from Nohea Kahaulelio and Lewis to take a 3-1 lead and scored all three goals in the second period with two from Castro and one from Kahea Kahaulelio to hold a 6-1 lead at the half.
The Athenas made up some ground in the third period as they shutout the Sagehens on the scoreboard and tallied two goals of their own to cut the lead down to 6-3 heading into the fourth.
After cutting it down to just a three goal difference, the Sagehens turned up the offense and tallied five goals in the fourth from Castro, Lewis, Morgan McCracken and Kahea Kahaulelio as they closed out the match to take round one of the Sixth Street Rivalry.
