REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo escaped Redlands on Wednesday night with a narrow 10-8 victory in double overtime. The Bulldogs looked to spoil the Sagehens' undefeated run through the SCIAC, but Pomona-Pitzer prevailed thanks to extra time goals from seniors Natalie Hill and Anna Yu. Hill sparked the offense, co-leading with Lucie Abele with two goals, and delivering a team-high two assists. On the defensive end, Nohea Kahaulelio snatched a team-high four steals while goalkeeper Morgan Stockham made eight saves.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to a 13-11 record overall and 8-0 in the SCIAC.
The Sagehens got off to a hot start, with the defense shutting out the Bulldogs while the offense put up four goals in the first period. Natalie Hill got on board first with an unassisted goal with 5:12 remaining and less than a minute later she assisted Janelle Lewis to make it 2-0. Kyla Pickell and Nadia Paquin scored with 26 seconds from one another to make it 4-0.
The Bulldogs finally got their first goal in the start of the second period thanks to Carmen Gardner. They followed up with a power play goal by Holly Kvanvig to cut the lead in half.
After halftime, the two sides remained quiet to start the third period as neither sides' defense refused to surrender easy goals. The Bulldogs finally cut the deficit within one off a powerplay with 2:34 left in the period, but Lucie Abele prevented the game from getting too close with two straight power play goals to close the period with a 6-3 lead.
Later in the fourth period, with the Sagehens ahead 7-4, the Bulldogs rallied for three straight to tie the game. Nohea Kahauleleio scored the go-ahead off an assist by Pickell with 2:29 left but Redlands tied the game before the end of regulation.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Sagehens managed to pull away in second extra time. With 1:34 left, Hill converted off a pass by Kahaulelio to take the lead. Anna Yu scored the insurance goal 34 seconds later off a pass by Hill to seal the victory.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host Whittier College and University of La Verne on Saturday, April 6 for a doubleheader. They will take on the Poets at 11:00 a.m. and the Leopards at 3:00 p.m.
