CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Athletic Department is proud to announce the unveiling of the brand new men's and women's golf practice area located on the campus of Pomona College.
This project came with the help of an anonymous donor to better the student-athlete experience and give the men's and women's team an easily accessible practice facility to help sharpen their skills and have the ability to hold practice sessions on campus. The new facility is located just south of Haldeman Pool and gives the teams access to hold practices in the comfort of their own campus rather than traveling to their previous practice course at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas.
"As we looked at the golf program and identifying high priority needs it was clear providing the team a place they could call home as well as an on campus practice area was critical", said Director of Athletics, Lesley Irvine. "These types of facility investments are key to the student-athlete experience and highlights the power of donor support and the commitment to athletics here at Pomona-Pitzer."
The new facility includes a 5,500 square foot green surface including multiple slopes for different angled puts, seven holes, two authentic sand hazards, a simulated rough area for close chips and a separate simulated fairway area to be used for longer shots towards the green.
The Pomona-Pitzer Men's and Women's golf teams have both been on the rise in recent years. Both programs reached their highest ranking in history last year as the men reached No. 48 and the women cracked the top-20 for the first time in program history at No. 19. The men's squad also had their first ever individual qualify for the NCAA Tournament as sophomore Conor Rooney finished in 37th overall and earned All-American honors.
The new golf facility is currently open and being used by the Pomona-Pitzer Golf teams in preparation for their 2018 spring season.
