Whittier Jumps Out Big Early, Defeats Baseball 11-2

Whittier, Calif. – The Whittier Baseball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three innings and cruised to an 11-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 19-12-1 overall and 13-9 in the SCIAC.

Andrew Vallejo was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBI, hitting a double and a homer from the leadoff spot in the order to lead the Poets. Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) was 3-for-4 for the Sagehens, while freshman third baseman E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) was 2-for-3.

Vallejo led off the first inning with a double and came around to score, then hit a three-run homer in the second to give the Poets a 4-0 lead. He then tacked on a two-run single as part of a five-run third inning to give himself five RBI in the first three innings.

Freshman Mark Okuma (Palos Verdes, Calif. - pictured) had an RBI single in the fourth, and Bruml had an RBI single in the seventh to account for Pomona-Pitzer's offense.

Pomona-Pitzer will return to action tomorrow when it returns home to Alumni Field to face Cal Lutheran at 1 p.m.
