Pomona-Pitzer Drops First Of Season At Cal Lutheran

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth, but Cal Lutheran responded with 11 unanswered runs to take an 11-3 win on Friday and hand the Sagehens their first loss of the season.

Pomona-Pitzer slips to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC with the defeat, while Cal Lutheran improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Sophomore pitcher Jake Bruml (San Mateo, Calif.) also suffered his first collegiate loss, falling to 9-1 overall (2-1 this season).

The Sagehens went ahead 3-0 in the fourth inning, as freshman first baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) hit a two-run double and came home on an RBI single from junior catcher Travis Bowers (Palo Alto, Calif. - pictured).

The lead didn't hold, though, as the Kingsmen tied it with three runs in the fourth, added three more in the fifth and tacked on another three in the sixth, before capping off the rally with two in the seventh.

Marcus Vinyard tied the score 3-3 with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth. Nicho DellaValle then gave the Kingsmen the lead in the fifth with a triple, coming home on an error on the relay, and Nick Boggan added a two-run homer to make it 6-3.

Despite taking his first loss, Bruml did have a strong day at the plate, batting 3-for-5, while senior right fielder Nick Gentili (Glendale, Calif.) and sophomore second baseman Mark Okuma (Palos Verdes, Calif.) were each 2-for-4. DellaValle ended 3-for-5 with three RBI for Cal Lutheran.

The teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Pomona-Pitzer's Alumni Field.
