Pasadena, Calif. - Senior center fielder Erik Munzer (Beverly Hills, Calif. - pictured) was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team cruised to an 11-1, seven-inning win at Caltech on Wednesday for its 25th win of the year.
The Sagehens improve to 25-11 overall and 18-7 in the SCIAC, marking the seventh year in a row that they have won at least 25 games. Caltech falls to 1-29 overall and 0-25 in the SCIAC.
Munzer got Pomona-Pitzer started with an RBI single in the first inning, scoring senior left fielder Mike Moyer (Oakland, Calif.), who led off the game with a double. After an error scored Munzer with the second run, junior catcher Jackson Badger (Portola Valley, Calif.) had a two-run single to make the score 4-0.
Munzer added a two-out RBI double in the second inning, and was followed by an RBI double from sophomore third baseman E.J. Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) to make the score 6-0. Munzer added another RBI single in the fourth and added a double in the sixth to set up a Lopez two-run single, which pushed the lead to double digits and set up the 10-run rule. Sophomore second baseman Mark Okuma (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and sophomore shortstop Sam Fox (New York, N.Y.) also had RBI hits.
Collin Majev (Baltimore, Md.) earned his first start of the year and threw three shutout innings, before being relieved by Drew Helgren (Seattle, Wash.) for two innings and Robert Weller (Irvine, Calif.) for two innings.
Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action when it travels to Occidental on Saturday for a single game, then concludes the regular season with home games against La Verne and Whittier on Sunday. The Sagehens have already clinched a SCIAC bid for May 3-5, and need just one more win to secure the two seed in the tournament.
