Whittier Rallies In Eighth To Take 6-4 Win

Whittier, Calif. - The Whittier Baseball team scored one run in the seventh and four in the eighth to rally from behind for a 6-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the first of a three-game series on Friday.

With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in the SCIAC. Whittier improves to 10-5 and remains perfect in the SCIAC at 7-0.

Pomona-Pitzer got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two-run RBI single from junior third baseman E.J. Lopez. After Whittier got a run back in the bottom of the second, senior catcher Travis Bowers (pictured) hit a solo homer in the third to make the score 3-1.

Sophomore first baseman Simon Rosenbuam, the reigning Division III National Player of the Week, tacked on an RBI single in the fifth to make the score 4-1. The lead held there until the seventh, when Cody Martinez hit an RBI triple to cut the Sagehens lead to 4-2.

Two Pomona-Pitzer errors helped set the table, and bring home the tying run in the eighth, and then Stephen Zavala hit a two-run single to give the Poets the 6-4 lead. Sophomore center fielder Kevin Brice singled with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate, but freshman shortstop Tanner Nishioka grounded out for the final out of the game.

Nishioka was 3-for-5 with two runs scored at the top spot in the batting order, while Rosenbaum was 2-for-3 with an RBI, moving to 13-for-15 in his last four games (11-for-12 in last weekend's three game series with Redlands). Zavala was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Whittier.

The two teams complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
