Claremont, Calif. - Freshman pitcher Lane Miles (pictured, photo by David Miles) threw six shutout innings to get the win, and junior first baseman Jake Bruml was 4-for-5 at the plate as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team took a 12-0 win at Occidental on Friday in the first of a three-game series.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-20 overall and 9-13 in the SCIAC. Occidental slips to 16-17 and 12-10 in league play.
Miles scattered nine hits over his six innings, but did not allow a run to score as he improved to 5-3 on the season. He got all the offense he would need in the first inning, as Simon Rosenbaum, E.J. Lopez and Bruml had consecutive RBI hits to stake the Sagehens to a 3-0 lead.
Tanner Nishioka and Rosenbaum added RBI singles in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-0, and Mark Okuma and Travis Bowers had RBIs in the fifth to make it 7-0. The Sagehens tacked on five more in the sixth, capped off by a two-run single by Sam Fox, to make it 12-0 and enforce the 10-run mercy rule, ending the game after seven innings.
Steven Glick threw the seventh to finish off the combined shutout, while everyone in the Pomona-Pitzer starting lineup had at least one hit. Bruml was 4-for-4 before the Tigers finally retired him in the seventh in his final plate appearance. Rosenbaum was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Kenny Rabin was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Okuma was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Fox was 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Alumni Field, beginning at 11 a.m.
