Miles Hurls Shutout As Sagehens Defeat Occidental

Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Lane Miles (pictured) threw a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team took a 9-0 win over Occidental in the first game of a key three-game SCIAC series on Friday.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in the SCIAC, while knocking Occidental back to 16-8 overall and 12-4 in league play. The two squads came into the weekend in a four-way tie in the loss column for first in the SCIAC, with Occidental and La Verne both 12-3, and Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran at 9-3.

Pomona-Pitzer scored five unearned runs in the first three innings to give Miles plenty of run support. A two-out error in the first accounted for the first run of the game, and an RBI groundout from shortstop Sam Fox made it 2-0 in the second.

Left fielder Kevin Brice had an RBI on an error in the third and another run came home on a throwing error on the play to make the score 4-0, before third baseman E.J. Lopez doubled down the line to give Pomona-Pitzer its first RBI via a hit. First baseman Simon Rosenbaum added an RBI single in the sixth, designated hitter Jake Bruml had a two-run double in the eighth and second baseman Kenny Rabin tacked on an RBI double in the eighth as well.

Meanwhile, Miles labored a bit through the early innings, walking two in the first and leaving them stranded, and leaving two more runners on in the second and third after two singles. He got stronger as the game progressed, though, as he did not allow his fifth hit until the ninth inning, before the Sagehens gave him a shutout with a double play.

Lopez the only player with more than one hit on the day (2-for-3) for either team as starter Joseph Kling took the loss for Occidental, as all six of his runs allowed were unearned.

The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Occidental, beginning at 11 a.m.
