Sagehens Ride Big Bats To Win Over Caltech

Pasadena, Calif. - Seniors Jake Bruml (pictured) and Sam Fox and junior Kevin Brice each finished with five RBI as the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team used a pair of big early innings to jump out to a huge lead and take a 29-4 win over Caltech on Friday in the first of a three-game series. 

With the win, the Sagehens are now 23-10 overall and 15-7 in the SCIAC, tying them with Cal Lutheran for second place, one game behind La Verne in first. Caltech falls to 2-29 overall and 0-22 in league play.

Pomona-Pitzer scored eight times in the second inning and then batted around twice to score 14 runs in the third and take a 23-1 lead.  Bruml had a three-run double in the second and Brice added a two-run double. In the third, junior first baseman Simon Rosenbaum hit a two-run homer to start the inning, Brice added his second two-run double, sophomore catcher Kevin Jordan added a two-run double and Fox capped it off with a two-run double.

Fox was 4-for-5 with four runs and five RBI as he stretched his hitting streak to 23 games (and 32 of 33 games this season, with the only exception coming when he was 0-for-2 with two hit by pitches and a walk in a win over Redlands. Bruml was 1-for-1 with five RBI (on a three-run double and two sacrifice flies), while Brice was 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI. Jordan was 3-for-4 with three RBI and backup Rob Simsiman was 2-for-2 with an RBI, giving the Sagehens a 5-for-6 effort from its catcher spot.

Sophomore Lane Miles picked up the win to improve to 6-4 on the year. Nicholas Radich threw the last three innings to get an automatic save, despite entering the game with a 24-3 lead.   

The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
