Big First Leads Redlands To SCIAC Win Over Sagehens

Redlands, Calif. - The Redlands Baseball team scored five times in the first inning and held off a Pomona-Pitzer comeback to take a 10-4 win on Friday afternoon on the first day of the double-elimination SCIAC Championship Tournament.

With the loss, the third-seeded Sagehens move on to an elimination game tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at top-seeded Cal Lutheran, which fell to La Verne in its opening round contest. Redlands and La Verne will face each other in a winner's bracket game at 12 noon.

Pomona-Pitzer almost got all the way back, as an RBI single from senior third baseman E.J. Lopez (pictured) in the top of the sixth cut the Redlands lead to 5-4. Lopez also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, which was followed by an RBI single from freshman second baseman Matt Omori to make the score 5-3. Senior shortstop Sam Fox had an RBI single in the third to score Lopez for the first Pomona-Pitzer run.

However, Redlands got two runs back in the seventh, keyed by an RBI single from John Keane and added three more in the eighth, capped off by a Joey Warner RBI double.

Lopex was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Pomona-Pitzer in the loss, while junior left fielder Kevin Brice was 2-for-4.  Warner was 2-for-4 with three RBI for Redlands, which took advantage of nine walks and a hit by pitch.

Pomona-Pitzer will try to stay alive against Cal Lutheran in the morning. The winner of that game will play again on Saturday afternoon against the loser of the La Verne-Redlands contest.
