CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Redlands in run-rule fashion by the score of 11-1 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The game began as a pitchers' duel with two of the best pitchers the SCIAC has to offer. Sagehen starter David Gerics went 6.2 innings, surrendered one run on five hits and tallied six strikeouts to get his third win of the season. Starting for the Bulldogs was Felix Minjarez who went 5.2 innings and gave up six hits with three earned runs.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the fourth inning as Christian Conci hit a deep RBI double to left field as Redlands jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens would answer in their next at bats as junior Tanner Nishioka got the first hit of the game for the Sagehens and used his speed to come around to score on wild pitches as Pomona-Pitzer evened up the score 1-1.
The Sagehens used fundamentally sound baseball to get their next run as sophomore Cade Hulse singled to get on, freshman Jeremy Burton sacrificed him to second and sophomore Adam Hinthorne drove him in with an RBI single to right field to give Pomona-Pitzer a 2-1 lead.
Senior Simon Rosenbaum tacked on one more as he belted an RBI double to right center to bring home Hinthorne as the Sagehens gave Gerics a 3-1 lead to work with.
Pomona-Pitzer broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth as Minjarez had bases loaded with two outs in the inning. A costly throwing error extended the inning for the Sagehens as they went on to score five runs with two outs in the inning, three of which included back-to-back-to-back hit batsmen with bases loaded to give the Sagehens an 8-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer finished off the Bulldogs in the seventh as yet another bases loaded hit batter brought home a run and then Rosenbaum drove in two more on an RBI walk-off double to give the Sagehens their second-straight win.
The Sagehens continue their series with the Bulldogs as they travel to Redlands on Saturday, February 27th for a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
