CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Caltech in game one of their three-game series by the score of 17-7 in seven innings.
Junior David Gerics got the start for the Sagehens as he went five innings, gave up seven hits and struck out 10 Beavers to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Sagehens had their bats working early on as they scored four runs in each of the first three innings. Sophomore Bryce Rogan tallied his fifth home run of the year in the first inning along with an RBI double by junior Tanner Nishioka and an RBI single by sophomore Matt Omori.
Freshman Cade Hulse cashed in on his first collegiate home run in the second along with an RBI double by senior Simon Rosenbaum and Rogan hit an RBI single in the third along with an RBI double by junior Kevin Jordan as the Sagehens took an 12-0 lead after three innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer added two more runs in the fourth as Nishioka singled home a runner and Rosenbaum walked with the bases loaded to give the Sagehens an 14-0 lead.
Caltech got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI single and went on to score six runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Sagehens lead down to 14-7.
Pomona-Pitzer responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth and scored two more in the bottom of the seventh as the Sagehens defeated the Beavers in seven innings to earn their eighth SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens will next travel to Caltech tomorrow as they end their three-game series with a double header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
