Baseball: Pomona-Pitzer Drops Game One To La Verne, 6-4

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened up with a 6-4 loss at home against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne to open up their three-game series on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 20-10 overall and 11-5 in SCIAC play. The Sagehens and Leopards were tied for second entering today's contest as the Leopards now hold a one-game lead over the Sagehens heading into the series finale doubleheader.

The Sagehens had three players with two-hit performances as Brian Knapp went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Jeremiah Quezada went 2-4 with an RBI and Adam Hinthorne went 2-3 with a run scored.

Tyler Yoshihara got the start for the Sagehens and suffered his first loss of the season to move to 5-1 overall. Yoshihara went five innings and gave up five runs on 11 hits in the loss.

The Leopards got on the board in the top of the first after an infield single loaded the bases and a hit batter brought in the first run of the game to allow the Leopards to play from in front with a 1-0 lead.

La Verne extended their lead in the top of the third after two RBI singles pushed the lead to 3-0 but the Sagehens got on the board in bottom half of the inning after Quezada hit a long single off of the right field wall to score Knapp to cut the lead down to 3-1.

Pomona-Pitzer struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take their first lead of the afternoon. Rob Simsiman got the rally going with a double down the left field line to bring in Seth Stone and Andrew Phillips followed up with an RBI ground out in the next at-bat to tie the game at 3-3. Knapp went ahead and gave the Sagehens the lead as he singled past a diving shortstop to bring home Simsiman as the Sagehens took a 4-3 lead after four inning of play.

La Verne made sure the lead didn't last for long as they retook the lead on back-to-back home runs to open up the fifth inning to reclaim the lead at 5-4. The Leopards went on to tack one more run on after an error by the Sagehen defense allowed a run to come in from third to extend the lead to 6-4 In the top of the sixth.

Pomona-Pitzer's offense went cold late in the game as they only notched one hit in the final four innings of play to drop game one to the Leopards, 6-4.
