CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split in their double header against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech with an 8-1 win in game one and an 8-6 loss in game two on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC this season.
Pomona-Pitzer 8, Caltech 1
The Sagehens were led by junior Jeremy Jess who went 4-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Jake Patterson-Kohout and junior Briann Knapp also had multi-hit games as Patterson-Kohout went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Knapp went 2-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Ryan Long went the distance on the mound with a complete game striking out nine and surrendered just one run in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer scored at least one run in each of their first five innings while shutting out Caltech early. Knapp got the scoring going with a solo shot in the bottom of the first. Freshman Jack Damelio drove home Patterson-Kohout in the second, Jess brought home Knapp on an RBI single in the third and freshman Kevin Lo singled home Patterson-Kohout in the fourth to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead through four innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer broke the game open with a four-run fifth. After an error by the Beaver defense surrendered the first run, Patterson-Kohout drove in two with an RBI single and Damelio came back for his second SAC fly of the day to extend the lead to 8-0.
Caltech got on the board in top of the seventh as the Beavers brought home one run off of an error by the Sagehens to cut the lead to 8-1.
Long was able to keep the Beavers off of the scoreboard late as the Sagehens closed out game one of the double header with an 8-1 victory.
Caltech 8, Pomona-Pitzer 6
The Sagehens were led by Lo and McCafferty who each went 3-5 in the loss.
The Beavers got off to a hot start as they put up seven runs in the top of the second inning to jump out to a big 7-0 lead early on. Pomona-Pitzer got two runs back in the bottom of the second after RBI singles from Damelio and Knapp to cut the lead down to 7-2.
Caltech added one more to its total in their next at-bats with an RBI single to push the lead to 8-2, but the Sagehens came fighting back with three more in the bottom of the fourth after Lo drove in two with a double down the right field line and junior Nolan McCafferty singled home Lo to get within striking distance at 8-5.
Pomona-Pitzer added one more run in the bottom of the sixth after McCafferty single home Knapp but couldn't complete the comeback as the Sagehens fell in the final game of the three-game series.
